ADDIS ABABA: June 11 (Ethiopian Informer) — The Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives and House of Federation on Monday postponed the Fourth National Population and Housing Census by a margin of one year period due to natural and manmade security challenges.
The National Population and Housing Census, which was initially scheduled to take place during the previous 2017-2018 Ethiopian fiscal year and previously postponed to a similar period due to security challenges, also on Monday postponed for another one year period amid recurrent natural disasters as well as security challenges that affected parts of the country, according to the motion presented to the joint houses on Monday.
Some members of the two houses, however, proposed a short-term postponement of the previously delayed national census, indicating improved security situations in the previously affected areas.
Recent security challenges had last year forced the Ethiopian parliament to postpone the national census as well as local elections for one year period last year.
The Ethiopian Central Statistics Agency (CSA) had recently announced that disclosed that the Fourth National Population and Housing Census will be held with different procedures, by embracing digital technology applications.
The CSA, in order to successfully conduct the much-awaited census, had last year finalized the purchase of some 180,000 mobile from Huawei and Lenovo as part of the 3.5 billion Ethiopian birr (128 million U.S. dollars) total budget that was secured to undertake the census.
