525 infected with Acute Watery Diarrhea in Ethiopia as outbreak hits nationwide

ADDIS ABABA: June 11 (Ethiopian Informer) – Some 525 people have been recently diagnosed with Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) amid an outbreak of the deadly disease in different parts of the country, an Ethiopian government official disclosed on Tuesday.

Beyene Moges, Deputy Director of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), told reporters on Tuesday that an outbreak of AWD has hit Ethiopia, in which some 525 cases have been diagnosed in Oromia, Amhara and Tigray regional states as well as the capital Addis Ababa.

According to figures from the EPHI, the Oromia region is the highest-hit in terms of the number of cases, where some 236 people said to have been diagnosed with AWD.

Last month, the Ethiopian Ministry of Health had disclosed the death of three people due to an outbreak of AWD in North Gondar area of the Amhara region.

The three people, who were receiving medical treatment after acquiring AWD, passed away as some 151 others also said to be infected with the disease in the region.

As Ethiopia’s rainy season approaches, healthcare experts from the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and EPHI have been recently warning the public to take the necessary measures so as to avoid unwanted contamination leading to AWD.
