Ethiopia brings home 51 citizens from conflict-hit Lebanon

ADDIS ABABA (EI): The Ethiopian government said it has successfully facilitated the return of 51 of its nationals from Lebanon, responding to escalating security concerns in the region.

On October 8, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement highlighting the safe arrival of these individuals, who had been enduring challenging circumstances while abroad.

The returnees landed at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa on Monday. The ministry emphasized that this operation underscores the government’s dedication to safeguarding the welfare of its citizens living overseas.

Nebiat Getachew, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to citizen-focused diplomacy. He stated that ongoing collaborations with partner organizations will continue to assist Ethiopians facing difficulties in foreign nations.

“Our primary objective has been ensuring the safety and well-being of Ethiopians in Lebanon, and the successful return of these 51 individuals reflects our concerted efforts,” Getachew remarked in the ministry’s statement.

Recent data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) indicates that Ethiopians constitute one of the largest migrant populations in Lebanon.

In light of the current circumstances, Ethiopian Airlines announced last week that it would suspend all flights to Beirut until further notice. Additionally, flights to Tel Aviv, Israel, have been halted until October 7, 2024.

The situation has escalated, with Israel increasing airstrikes on Beirut and surrounding areas, primarily targeting Hezbollah officials and installations. Concurrently, a “limited” ground operation has been initiated in Lebanon.
