IGAD welcomes Sudan’s incoming PM, hails historic power-sharing constitutional decree

ADDIS ABABA: August 23 (EI) – Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has welcomed the hailed the appointment of Sudan’s new prime minister.

Abdallah Hamdock was appointed as prime minister of the Transitional Government of Sudan following the formal signature of the power-sharing constitutional decree on Saturday.

“The Executive Secretary of IGAD, Mahboub Maalim, sent a message of congratulations to the people of Sudan on the historic signing of the power sharing constitutional decree on August 17 in Khartoum,” an IGAD statement issued on Wednesday read.

The East African bloc’s also “warmly welcomed the appointment of H.E. Abdallah Hamdock as Prime Minister of the Transitional Government of Sudan.”

The IGAD Executive Secretary also described the signing of the deal as “a historical achievement signaling a new dawn for the people of Sudan.”

Maalim further stressed IGAD’s strong commitment to support Sudan’s incoming Prime Minister Hamdock as well as the transitional governing institutions towards the country’s full realization of peace.

“IGAD is fully committed to engaging with and supporting Prime Minister Hamdock and transitional governing institutions towards a full realization of peace, reconciliation and democratic transition in Sudan,” the statement read.

Maalim also commended the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, and the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who is also the current Chairperson of IGAD, for their efforts towards Sudan’s peace process.

The IGAD Executive Secretary stressed that “it was their (Faki and Ahmed) tireless efforts in leading months of negotiations that bore fruit.”

Maalim also called on the international community to rally behind the transitional leadership of Sudan and support the country’s economic recovery as well as peace, reconciliation and democratic transition efforts.
