ADDIS ABABA: June 3 (Ethiopian Informer) – The Ethiopian Ministry of Health has disclosed that in excess of 360 cases of Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) have been recorded recently.
The AWD cases were recorded in Ethiopia’s Amhara, Oromia, Tigray and Somali regional states as well in Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa, the ministry said late Sunday.
The ministry further indicated that the capital Addis Ababa has so far recorded five cases of AWD, while concerted efforts are currently underway to prevent further spread of the disease across the city with an estimated 5 million plus inhabitants.
Medical personnel are currently dispatched across Ethiopia to give training to local people on ways to avoid possible occurrence of AWD, according to the ministry.
The supply of medical tools has been also sent to health facilities throughout the country to treat future cases of AWD, it was noted.
With the rainy season expected to start in June and continue until the mid-September, the Ethiopian government is bracing for an outbreak of AWD and is doing preparatory works to prevent the disease’s occurrence.
Federal and regional health institutions have also been combating AWD outbreaks by treating unhygienic conditions in factories, health facilities, agricultural areas and eateries.
