ADDIS ABABA (EI) — Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) had announced a record annual revenue of 124.2 billion birr (about 770 million U.S. dollars) from electric energy sales during the 2025/26 Ethiopian fiscal year, which ended on July 7.
The EEP — a state-owned enterprise managing the East African nation’s power generation, high-voltage transmission grids, and bulk electricity exports — announced on Friday that this record annual revenue marked an increase of 57.8 percent when compared to the previous fiscal year.
Presenting the company’s annual performance report on Friday, EEP Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ashebir Balcha said the reported annual revenue was generated from electric energy sales to domestic customers, exports to neighboring countries, and other revenue sources.
Noting that Ethiopia’s national electricity generation capacity has reached 9,730 megawatts, Balcha said the country added 1,811 megawatts of electricity during the past fiscal year, representing a 23 percent increase from the previous fiscal year.
Hydropower plants contributed the largest share of electricity generated during the reporting period, accounting for 97 percent of the country’s total.
The EEP also reported that Ethiopia generated more than 475 million US dollars from electricity exports to neighboring countries during the fiscal year, according to state-run Ethiopian News Agency (ENA).
The reported revenue represented a 25 percent increase compared to the previous fiscal year, it was noted.
Balcha said the achievement demonstrated Ethiopia’s growing power supply to neighboring countries and its potential to become a regional energy hub.
Last year, the East African country put into operation its flagship Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), as well as the Aisha II and Asela wind power generation projects.
Despite its record achievements last year, the EEP, however, voiced concern that the projected El Nino phenomenon could have a negative impact on the country’s power generation operations and energy sales revenue for the current 2026/27 Ethiopian fiscal year, which began on July 8.
