ADDIS ABABA (EI) — The Ethiopian government has lauded “significant” progress in expanding access to healthcare services through the country’s flagship community-based health insurance platform.
The Ethiopian Health Insurance Service announced in a statement issued Thursday that more than 55 million citizens benefited from the government’s community-based health insurance initiative during the recently concluded fiscal year. This included free healthcare services for more than 7.5 million indigent citizens.
According to the Ethiopian Health Insurance Service, the East African country’s flagship Community Health Insurance program has now reached an 86 percent coverage rate, operating in 1,279 districts across the nation.
With more than 10.7 million new citizens enrolling in the national health insurance platform this year, the service stated that over 55.49 million people received medical care from health facilities nationwide under the system during the 2026/27 Ethiopian fiscal year, which ended on July 7.
Among these beneficiaries, 14 percent—or 7.54 million people—were financially disadvantaged citizens who received free medical and healthcare services.
