ADDIS ABABA (EI) — The Ethiopian government announced that the country’s annual electricity generating capacity surpassed 9,730 megawatts (MW) during the recently concluded budget year.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy, in a statement released Saturday, revealed that the country’s annual generating capacity saw a significant increase from 7,910 megawatts last year. Ethiopia generated in excess of 9,730 megawatts of electricity during the 2025/26 budget year, which concluded earlier this month.
Data from the ministry showed that Ethiopia’s energy production capacity continues to rely almost entirely on renewable sources.
Hydropower infrastructure was the primary source of electricity during the budget year, generating more than 9,200 megawatts.
Wind power facilities were the second-largest source of energy, producing approximately 504 megawatts during the reporting period, according to the ministry.
The Ministry of Water and Energy noted that the remaining electricity was generated from the country’s solar, solid waste, and geothermal infrastructure.
As Ethiopia continues to invest extensively in expanding its renewable energy capabilities, the government recently disclosed that national electricity access has increased from 44 percent to about 54 percent in recent years, bolstered mainly by extensive infrastructure development.
Among the notable power projects that came into full operation during the 2025/26 fiscal year is the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The milestone came nearly 14 years after construction of the 5,150-megawatt national flagship project began in 2011 on the Blue Nile River near the Sudanese border.
Speaking at the project’s inauguration ceremony in the country’s northwestern Benishangul-Gumuz region, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed highlighted the dam’s potential to strengthen the national economy by providing stable energy for industries, improving livelihoods, and advancing regional energy integration.
