Ethio Telecom revenue surges to 215.8 bln birr as subscriber base hits 90 mln

  • Company reports 33 percent revenue growth in 2025/26 fiscal year, driven by digital expansion
  • Telebirr transactions top 9 trillion birr

ADDIS ABABA (EI) — Ethiopia’s state-run operator Ethio Telecom announced today a significant increase in its subscriber base, reaching 90.1 million people out of the country’s estimated population of about 135 million, amid major growth in the company’s annual revenue.

Unveiling the company’s annual performance report on Thursday in Addis Ababa, Chief Executive Officer Frehiwot Tamiru said the company generated 215.8 billion birr (about 1.33 billion U.S. dollars) in total revenue during the recently concluded 2025/26 Ethiopian fiscal year, which ended on July 7, recording a 33.2 percent growth compared with the previous fiscal year.

The CEO said the company’s performance demonstrates its ongoing transition from a conventional telecommunications operator to a comprehensive digital services provider supporting financial inclusion, digital commerce, enterprise solutions, and technology-driven economic activities.

The state telecom provider also highlighted its flagship digital payment platform, Telebirr. The CEO underscored the platform’s rapid growth, noting it has become “a major pillar of Ethiopia’s digital payment ecosystem.”

Frehiwot disclosed that Telebirr has surpassed 9.13 trillion birr in cumulative transactions, strengthening the company’s role as a key driver of Ethiopia’s digital economy.

Out of the platform’s cumulative transactions since its launch, 4.19 trillion birr in transactions were conducted during the concluded fiscal year alone, according to the CEO.

Telebirr currently handles an average daily transaction value of 11 billion birr and serves some 21.64 million customers, alongside expanding its digital credit and microfinance services.
