Over five million jobs created in Ethiopia in just-concluded fiscal year: PM

ADDIS ABABA (EI) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on Tuesday that more than 5.5 million jobs were created during the recently concluded 2025/26 fiscal year.

Addressing the outgoing Ethiopian House of Peoples’ Representatives (HoPR) on Tuesday, Abiy detailed the breakdown of the employment figures, noting that approximately 4.9 million Ethiopians successfully secured domestic employment opportunities.

The prime minister said his government’s overseas employment strategies enabled more than 600,000 citizens to benefit from various employment opportunities in different foreign countries during the 2025/2026 fiscal year that ended on July 7.

Compared to the previous fiscal year, job creation witnessed a notable 13 percent increase domestically, while overseas job placements surged by 27 percent during the reported period, Abiy highlighted.

The prime minister’s performance report underscored significant growth patterns across the country’s key employment sectors.

Sector-specific data revealed that agriculture remains the backbone of Ethiopia’s labor market, accounting for the largest share by providing jobs to more than 2 million citizens.

The service sector closely followed, with engagements in trade, digitization, as well as urban development initiatives generating roughly 1.8 million jobs.

According to the prime minister, the industrial sector employed more than 900,000 people over the course of the recently concluded Ethiopian fiscal year.

In addition to traditional sectors, Abiy highlighted that initiatives designed to curb youth unemployment, such as a specialized digitization initiative, have already benefited some 40,000 young Ethiopians, equipping them with the essential digital skills required to secure remote work opportunities globally.
