ADDIS ABABA (EI) — African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf on Friday called for enhanced continental collaboration to address a range of challenges hindering Africa’s integration, security, public health, and development aspirations.
The chairperson of the 55-member continental organization made the urgent call while addressing the closing meeting of the Ordinary Session of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee on Friday at the headquarters of the AU in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.
Speaking about a range of peace and security perils affecting the continent, Youssouf warned that Africa “continues to face complex and evolving challenges.” He emphasized that addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts in fostering “African-led solutions to African problems.”
Regarding the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, the chairperson acknowledged the progress made during the recent African Union High-Level Summit of Heads of State and Government on Ebola. He noted that the summit “successfully mobilized political support and resources to strengthen the continental response.”
He commended AU countries for their solidarity and generous contributions, while also acknowledging the government of DRC’s for its “continued commitment and mobilization of national resources to contain the outbreak.”
The high-level summit secured a total of 910 million U.S. dollars in Ebola-specific pledges to the affected countries and operational partners, including around 80 million dollars in pledges by African states.
Meanwhile, Youssouf highlighted the impact of recent global uncertainties on the continent, noting that maritime disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz have caused “significant economic repercussions for African economies, particularly through their impact on global energy markets and supply chains.”
The AUC chief expressed hope that the recently announced ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran would contribute to easing regional tensions and restoring stability.
