AU, IGAD congratulate Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party on election victory

ADDIS ABABA (EI) — The African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Tuesday congratulated Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party (PP) on its victory of the June 1 seventh general election.

In a statement, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said Ethiopia’s 7th general election process “demonstrated the commitment of Ethiopians to further consolidate democracy as the bedrock of socio-economic development.”

He congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his ruling Prosperity Party (PP) for the “remarkable victory” in attaining the majority of seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives (HoPR), as announced by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).

Youssouf reiterated the 55-member continental organization’s commitment to consolidate democratic governance across the African continent through credible, peaceful, and transparent electoral processes.

He further acknowledged the NEBE for its “professionalism and commitment towards the smooth conduct of the election” during the electoral process.

In a separate statement, the Djibouti-based IGAD commended the successful conduct of the general elections. It congratulated PM Abiy and his party on the election victory.

The East African bloc also acknowledged the Ethiopian people for their peaceful participation, which contributed to the orderly conduct of the election.

The two organizations’ statements followed the NEBE’s announcement on Sunday, declaring the PP as the winner of the 7th general election. The party secured 438 of the 486 contested seats in the the HoPR, granting the party the mandate to form government and nominate the country’s prime minister.
