ADDIS ABABA (EI) – A tragic traffic accident in northeastern Ethiopia on Monday resulted in the deaths of at least 31 individuals and left more than 30 others injured, according to local officials.
The incident occurred early Monday morning around 6:00 AM local time when a public bus, which was traveling from Dessie city in the Amhara regional state, lost control and plunged into a ravine approximately 100 meters deep, the Kombolcha City Administration said on Monday.
The bus was carrying 64 passengers at the time of the accident.
Local officials confirmed that 33 others sustained injuries, both serious and minor, due to the crash.
Those injured are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby healthcare facilities.
The Kombolcha City Administration noted that police are investigating the cause of this deadly accident.
They highlighted the challenging nature of the road where the incident occurred, commonly referred to as the “S” turn, which connects Dessie city to Kombolcha city.
Meanwhile, the local administration expressed its “deep sorrow” over the loss of life and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
This tragic event is part of a troubling trend of deadly traffic incidents in Ethiopia, often attributed to reckless driving, inadequate law enforcement, and poor road conditions.
