ADDIS ABABA (EI) — The Ethiopian government on Monday launched the 2026 edition of the Green Legacy Initiative, aiming to plant more than eight billion seedlings throughout the country.
Announcing the launch of this year’s edition of the nationwide tree planting campaign, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the country has finalized preparations to realize the goal of planting 8 billion new seedlings as part of the continued national reforestation drive.
“With a target of planting 8 billion seedlings this year, we are steadily advancing toward our larger set goal of 65 billion trees,” Abiy said.
The prime minister called on Ethiopians from all walks of life to “join the movement and leave your green legacy for future generations.”
Abiy recently announced that the country has prepared the target of eight billion seedlings for planting during the upcoming rainy season.
Launched back in 2019, the Green Legacy Initiative has witnessed the planting of more than 48 billion tree seedlings, according to official figures.
With the planned in excess of 8 billion seedlings during this year’s edition of the national planting campaign, the country will have facilitated the planting of more than 56 billion trees within the span of close to 7 years.
