African Union welcomes Iran-U.S. peace agreement

ADDIS ABABA (EI) — The African Union Commission (AUC) on Monday welcomed the peace agreement between the United States of America and Iran.

In a statement, Chairperson of the AU Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf welcomed the peace agreement that was announced Monday by both parties and the mediation team. He “encouraged all parties to remain committed to the full implementation of the agreement.”

Chairperson of the 55-member continental organization further urged the parties to the agreement “to continue advancing efforts that promote lasting peace, stability, and cooperation in the Middle East and beyond.”

The African Union had recently warned that escalations in the Middle East threaten international peace and security and risk further destabilizing an already fragile situation, with “significant implications” for Africa.

The United States and Iran have reached a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to end hostilities, lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and halt military operations across multiple fronts.

The deal announced early Monday, long anticipated as the three-month conflict continued to batter global supply chains and rattle financial markets, offered a glimmer of hope for an end to the fighting and a return to stability across the region.
