ADDIS ABABA (EI) — The Ethiopian government on Tuesday endorsed a record close to 2.34 trillion Ethiopian Birr (ETB) draft annual federal government budget for the upcoming 2026/2027 Ethiopian fiscal year, which will start on July 8.
The Ethiopian Council of Ministers, in a statement issued Tuesday, said the record annual federal government budget, amounting about 2.34 trillion birr, will cover recurrent expenditures, capital expenditures, support to regional governments, and finance implementation of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“After extensive discussion on the proposed federal government draft budget, the Council unanimously decided to forwarded it to the Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives,” the statement read.
The draft budget, awaiting approval by the lower chamber of the Ethiopian parliament, marked a significant increase when compared to the current fiscal year’s budget of 1.93 trillion Ethiopian birr.
The draft budget has been prepared based on the objectives set forth in the country’s three-year Development and Investment Plan, and the medium-term Macroeconomic and Fiscal Framework, according to the statement.
The annual budget also put into consideration the performance of the concluding 2026/27 Ethiopian fiscal year’s program budget, and by assessing the financial capacity of the government and the expenditure required to achieve the goals set by the government.
