ADDIS ABABA (EI) — Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has hailed Ethiopia’s economic progress despite global uncertainties, including the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The IMF Managing Director, following her working visit to the East African country, where she held discussions with the country’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, highlighted the country’s recent development progress despite the adverse effects of the currents Middle East conflict.
“At a difficult time, Ethiopia is making impressive progress on an ambitious economic reform program,” the IMF chief said on X.
She stressed that Ethiopia is “coming into this shocks in a position of increased strength thanks to its ongoing reforms.”
Georgieva further reaffirmed IMF’s “strong support for the reform efforts – and overall commitment to Ethiopia and the region.”
In an interview with the state-run Ethiopian Press Agency, the IMF chief elaborated overview of the impact of the Middle East crisis on Ethiopia’s economy and the country’s development progress.
Georgieva said Ethiopia recorded robust economic growth over the past year, while export earnings and domestic revenues exceeded expectations. She noted that these achievements reflect the government’s determination to implement bold reforms despite a difficult global environment.
Meanwhile, after meeting the visiting IMF Managing Director this morning, PM Abiy highlighted the two sides ongoing partnership and shared priorities. He commended the Fund’s continued engagement to Ethiopia’s economic progress.
