ADDIS ABABA (EI) — Ethiopia on Sunday inaugurated four key industrial projects at the Hawassa Industrial Park, aiming to drive the country’s renewable energy and industrial development ambitions.
Inaugurating the newly-launched industrial projects, including three solar energy factories and a gas plant, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the facilities are expected to drive Ethiopia’s clean energy transition and industrial growth aspirations.
The three solar factories, with a combined capacity of generating 11.3 gigawatts of clean energy annually, are expected to contribute to Ethiopia’s renewable energy ambitions, Abiy said.
He said the newly launched gas plant — with a production capacity of 900 tons of oxygen, 40,000 tons of nitrogen, and 7 tons of hydrogen annually — will play a critical role through sustainable industrial supply.
The Ethiopian government said the inauguration of these four key factories underscores the country’s “strong emphasis and focus” on renewable energy expansion and industrial growth as key drivers of the country’s economic transformation push.
Abiy said in addition to their economic development contribution, the four factories are expected to create in excess of 4,650 jobs for the country’s youth, thereby promoting knowledge and skills transfer.
Located in Ethiopia’s southern city of Hawassa, about 275 km south of the capital, Addis Ababa, the Hawassa Industrial Park is regarded as Ethiopia’s model industrial park and a leading destination for foreign investors.
