ADDIS ABABA (EI) — The Ethiopian government on Tuesday disclosed the discovery of ancient Homo Sapiens fossils dating back to approximately 100,000 years in the Middle Awash Rift Valley, providing “important new insights” into human evolution and early human lifestyles.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Ethiopian Heritage Authority (EHA) said the latest discoveries help fill “a long-standing gap” in the understanding of human evolution in Africa, as well as the level of technological development achieved by early humans during that period.
The findings also uncovered stone tools used by early humans, human fossils, and a wide range of animal remains.

The authority said that the new discovery was made through extensive archaeological research that was conducted over several years, by bringing together scientists from 24 countries.
The Ethiopian government underscored that these latest findings reinforce Ethiopia’s significance in the story of human origins.
