ADDIS ABABA (EI) — A traffic accident in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, on Monday killed at least three people, while 16 others sustained serious and minor injures, authorities confirmed.
The Addis Ababa Police Commission said the tragic incident happened around the Lamberet neighborhood of Addis Ababa in the early hours of Monday, when a minibus carrying 19 people lost control and overturned while traveling downhill.
Police highlighted that an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the accident.
Highlighting that the minibus was carrying above its maximum capacity, police urged public transport providers to adhere to the city’s traffic regulations to ensure the safety of their passengers.
The crash is the latest in a series of deadly traffic accidents in Ethiopia, often attributed to reckless driving, and lax enforcement of traffic laws.
A recent government report highlighted that drivers are to blame for more than 60 percent of traffic accidents in the country.
With Ethiopia’s growing economy and a rising middle class, leading to a steadily increase in the number of vehicles on the roads over the past several years, experts call for strict enforcement of safety regulations along with stringent licensing system.
