ADDIS ABABA (EI) — Local authorities have confirmed that at least 30 people lost their lives in landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in the Gamo Zone of Ethiopia.
The tragic landslide occurred on Tuesday as torrential rains led to flooding across several areas in three districts within the Gamo Zone of the South Ethiopia Regional State, according to a social media post from the Gamo Zone Government Communications Affairs Department.
Authorities have cautioned that the death toll may rise as rescue operations are currently underway to locate individuals who remain missing.
This deadly landslide incident coincides with Ethiopia’s rainy season, which began in February and is expected to continue until March.
In the meantime, local officials reported that rescue efforts have been hampered by road blockages caused by landslides and floodwaters, which have obstructed public transportation in the affected regions.
