Ethiopian airlines teams up with DRC gov’t to launch Air Congo

ADDIS ABABA: In a landmark development for aviation in Africa, Ethiopian Airlines, recognized as the continent’s largest and fastest growing airline, has officially announced its collaboration with the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to establish Air Congo.

Under this partnership, the DRC government will maintain a 51 percent majority stake in the newly formed Air Congo, while Ethiopian Airlines will hold a 49 percent share, as revealed in a statement released late Tuesday.

Mesfin Tasew, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, remarked that the introduction of Air Congo represents “a significant step” in the airline’s strategic initiative to work alongside African governments and improve air transport across the continent.

“This partnership will provide greater connectivity for the DRC and Central Africa, facilitating investment, trade, and tourism, thereby contributing to socio-economic growth of the region,” Tasew stated, expressing appreciation for the DRC government and other stakeholders for their dedication and cooperation in bringing this partnership to fruition.

Air Congo will operate under the management of Ethiopian Airlines and will begin its services with two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, targeting domestic markets and launching operations at seven airports within the DRC.

The two partners have signed essential technical agreements covering aircraft leasing, comprehensive technical support, and systems support. Furthermore, Ethiopian Airlines is set to provide training for Congolese nationals in various roles, including pilots, cabin crew, sales and services staff, and technicians.

This expansion aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ goal to capitalize on the increasing demand for air travel throughout Africa.

The national carrier has indicated that this initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at establishing multiple hubs across the continent, complementing existing collaborations with ASKY Airlines in Lome, Malawi Airlines in Lilongwe, and Zambia Airways in Lusaka.

Having successfully achieved its Vision 2025 strategic plan ahead of schedule, Ethiopian Airlines is now focused on implementing a new 15-year strategic vision known as Vision 2035, which aims to position it among the top 20 most competitive and leading aviation groups globally.
