UNECA releases groundbreaking report on Africa’s dev’t progress

ADDIS ABABA (EI): In a significant move to bolster Africa’s development trajectory, the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) has unveiled a pivotal report to assist the implementation of global and continental development goals, as part of the global Agenda 2030 and Africa’s Agenda 2063.

The report, titled “Towards Africa’s Prosperity: Creating Conditions for Socially Inclusive, Environmentally Sustainable and Well-Governed Continent,” is a comprehensive document aims to assist African nations in accelerating the implementation of both the global Agenda 2030 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, according to the UNECA.

The release of this report comes in response to a clarion call made by world leaders in January 2020 for a “Decade of Action” to expedite the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. UN Secretary-General António Guterres further underscored this urgency through his initiative, ‘Our Common Agenda,’ which emphasizes foresight analysis and strategic planning to address significant global challenges.

The backdrop of this report is a world grappling with severe economic disruptions exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing crisis stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and an escalating climate crisis. These factors have led to rampant global hunger, limited access to essential health services, deteriorating educational quality, gender inequality, violent conflicts, and heightened vulnerability to natural disasters—issues that disproportionately affect Africa.

As the region most severely impacted by these crises, Africa stands at a crossroads that threatens its ability to achieve the SDGs established in 2015. The newly released report aims to provide actionable insights for African countries to navigate these challenges effectively and align their strategies with the aspirations outlined in both Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2063.

The report delves into several key themes that are critical to Africa’s development, providing a comprehensive analysis of the current landscape and outlining pathways toward a prosperous future. First, it assesses the economic and social conditions across the continent, offering a nuanced understanding of the challenges and opportunities that exist.

Central to this analysis is the establishment of a comprehensive definition of prosperity tailored specifically for Africa. This definition takes into account the unique contexts and aspirations of African nations, setting a clear vision for what prosperity should encompass.

To explore viable pathways to achieving this prosperity by 2030, the report employs scenario casting techniques, utilizing macroeconomic models to project various futures based on different strategic choices. This analytical approach allows for a deeper understanding of the potential impacts of various policies and initiatives.

Within these frameworks, the report identifies several ‘game changers’ that are pivotal for accelerating development. For instance, it emphasizes the urgent need for an agricultural revolution to harness Africa’s rich green resources. This transformation would not only enable self-sufficiency but also position the continent as a net exporter of agricultural products.

Additionally, the report highlights the importance of human capital development, advocating for significant investments in education and skills training to empower the workforce. Infrastructure expansion is also underscored as essential for improving logistics and transportation networks, which are vital for economic growth.

Entrepreneurship and private sector development emerge as critical areas needing attention, with recommendations for creating an environment that fosters business growth. Gender equality is another focal point, emphasizing the necessity of ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens.

The report also discusses the urban advantage, suggesting that leveraging urbanization can significantly contribute to economic growth. Regional integration is identified as a key strategy, particularly through initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to enhance intra-African trade.

Financial mobilization is highlighted as crucial for securing resources needed for development projects, while environmental sustainability is woven throughout the narrative, stressing that growth must not come at the expense of the planet.

In summary, the report paints a detailed picture of the interconnected themes that will shape Africa’s path to prosperity. By addressing these areas holistically, it sets forth a roadmap that not only aims to uplift the continent but also aligns with global frameworks for sustainable development.
