ADDIS ABABA (EI): Ethiopians across the nation have gathered to honor National Flag Day Monday, a celebration underscoring the importance of unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The day was marked by a series of events and speeches aimed at reinforcing the commitment to peace and development.
The Prime Minister’s Office, the House of Peoples Representatives, and various regional government bodies participated in the festivities, which were themed “National Flag for our Unity, Sovereignty and Elevation of Ethiopia.” This theme resonated deeply with attendees as they reflected on the flag’s significance in representing the nation’s values.
President Taye Atske-Selassie delivered a poignant address during the celebrations, emphasizing the flag as a symbol of national unity forged through the sacrifices of previous generations. He articulated that the flag embodies patriotism, social cohesion, and the collective spirit of Ethiopians.
“The national flag stands as a testament to our sacrifices, freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” President Taye stated, urging citizens to draw inspiration from their ancestors’ dedication to preserving Ethiopia’s independence.
In his remarks, the President highlighted Ethiopia’s historical resilience against foreign adversaries, asserting that the nation has maintained its sovereignty under the banner of its flag. He called upon younger generations to actively engage in promoting peace and development, echoing the commitment shown by those who came before them.
The celebrations took place at the House of Peoples Representatives, attended by high-ranking officials including Speaker of the House of Federation Agegnehu Teshager and parliament Speaker Tagesse Chafo. President Taye reiterated the flag’s role in fostering national solidarity and state-building.
He noted that Ethiopia’s flag has served as an inspiration for liberation movements across Africa and the Caribbean, influencing their own struggles for independence. The colors of Ethiopia’s flag have become synonymous with freedom for many around the globe.
Concluding his address, President Taye called for citizens to unite their efforts and resources towards building a resilient nation. He drew parallels between this spirit of collaboration and the collective endeavor behind significant projects like the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), reinforcing a shared vision for a prosperous future.
As Ethiopians celebrated their flag, the day served not only as a reminder of their rich history but also as a rallying cry for ongoing unity and progress in the face of contemporary challenges.
