ADDIS ABABA (EI): The United Nations has disclosed that some 4.5 million people are internally displaced across Ethiopia as of the June this year.
The statement was made by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on Thursday in its latest report on Ethiopia’s internal displacement crisis.
Even though some 3.3 million internally displaced persons have returned to their areas of origin throughout Ethiopia since January 2022, the UN agency said an estimated 4.5 million people are currently displaced in both rural and urban locations, mainly in Somali, Oromia and Tigray regions.
About 56 percent of internally displaced persons have been displaced for more than one year, while 23 percent for two to four years and 11 percent of the internally displaced persons have been displaced for five or more years.
The UNOCHA said many of the internally displaced persons, especially those living in protracted displacement, can be assisted to return, relocate or locally integrate, according to assessments.
“It is important to note that 3.3 million IDPs have returned to their areas of origin since January 2022. However, due to ongoing displacement in several regions the number of IDPs today stands at 4.5 million,” it said.
