ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia on Tuesday inaugurated Science Museum in the capital Addis Ababa.
The newly-inaugurated dome-shaped Science Museum is said to be Africa’s first of its kind, which the Ethiopian government said will help transform the country’s aspiration to achieve science and technology excellence.
The museum, which was built at a cost of 60 million USD, incorporates two building facilities consisting of a research center as well as a facility that would preserve technological findings across different time periods.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the facility will offer Ethiopians to inquire, explore, innovate and invent.
Abiy said the science museum, which was funded and constructed with support from China, is “designed to unleash imagination”.
“The magnificent ring-shaped building and dome in the center of Addis Ababa is Science Museum. Our Identity is inspired by its circular shape which symbolizes perpetual development, human wisdom and is a testament to Ethiopia’s dedication to the future of technology,” the Ethiopian PM’s Office said.
The facility, equipped with a solar energy system, incorporates sections specifically dedicated to permanent and fleeting science and art exhibitions, it was noted.
Meanwhile, the science museum’s inauguration event coincided with an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-themed conference.
Abiy, while addressing the conference, highlighted the role of Artificial Intelligence in Ethiopia’s digital transformation agenda anchored in Digital Ethiopia 2025.
