ADDIS ABABA: The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced a new 7.7 million USD investment to train the next generation of 750 Ethiopian disaster risk management professionals at Bahir Dar University (BDU).
The announcement was made by USAID’s Ethiopia Mission Director, Sean Jones, as he met with university vice-president, Tesfaye Shiferaw, the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia disclosed Wednesday.
Th investment, dubbed Feed the Future Ethiopia Resilience Platform, is said to be the largest single external investment in the history of BDU.
The investment follows nearly two decades of U.S. government support to BDU, including funding the university’s Institute of Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Studies.
Reiterating the Unites States’ commitment to the health, welfare, and prosperous future of the people of Ethiopia, said in 2021, the embassy said USAID invested more than 1.2 billion USD across Ethiopia in humanitarian and development aid.
In the Amhara region alone, it has provided over 430 million USD in humanitarian and development aid in the last two years.
“This is another example of cooperation between the American people and the people of Ethiopia,” the statement read.
