Telebirr surpasses 21.14 mln subscribers, over 25.67 bln birr transaction amount

ADDIS ABABA: Ethio-Telecom on Friday disclosed that its flagship online financial platform, Telebirr, has garnered 21.14 million subscribers.

Ethiopia’s state-owned telecom service provider, Ethio-Telecom announced that the recently lunched Telebirr has garnered 21.14 million subscribers amid growing customers.

“Telebirr has been subscribed by 21.14 million subscribers, 89 master agents, 74. 82,000 agents and over 21,000 merchants within a short span of time,” Ethio-Telecom said in a statement Friday.

In addition, Ethio-Telecom’s Telebirr based transaction amount has reached 25.67 billion Ethiopian birr integrating with 13 banks to transfer money from bank to Telebirr and with 10 banks to transfer money from Telebirr to bank demonstrating its being best digital payment option.

The company has recently signed agreements with the Ethiopian Airlines to enable passengers purchase domestic flight tickets.

It has also signed accord with Ethiopian electric utility as well as water and sewerage services providing institutions to collect the Telebirr based monthly service bill payments. Telebirr also serves to settle traffic penalty payment. It has also signed accord with Hybrid Designs PLC, provider of ride taxi services in the capital Addis Ababa, to collect transport service fares and provide online sales delivery, among others.

Also on Friday, Ethio-Telecom and National Lottery Administration have signed a strategic partnership agreement to market digital lottery.

Likewise, the company is strongly committed to implement telebirr integrated service payments with other similar institutions and make all payments possible in one place in the near future thereby strengthening the initiatives of making digital Ethiopia’s set vision a reality.
