Ethiopia restores partial telecom services in conflict-hit Tigray region

ADDIS ABABA (EI) — Ethiopia’s sole telecom operator, Ethio-Telecom on Wednesday disclosed it has restored partial telecom services in the country’s northern Tigray regional state.

In a press statement, Ethio-Telecom said partial telecom services have been restored after a more than three weeks long communications blackout.

“It is to be recalled because of the problem that happened in Tigray over the last three weeks that there was telecom interruption,” said the statement.

“Currently, through maintenance and rehabilitation of telecom infrastructures, as well as using alternative power sources we’ve resumed telecommunications services in several areas” the statement further said.

Ethio-Telecom said the cities on Dansha, Terkan, Maitsebri, Humera, Sheraro and Mai-Kadra had partial telecom restoration while Alamata city’s telecommunication services were fully restored.

The latest development came after the federal government on Saturday announced it had captured the regional capital, Mekelle, a city of more than 500,000 people.

The Ethiopian government has been undertaking military operations against the TPLF since Nov. 4,. The TPLF used to rule over Ethiopia’s Tigray regional state.

The federal government’s operations followed the TPLF’s reported attack on the Northern command base of the Ethiopian Defense Force, a division stationed in the region for over two decades.

Prior to the ongoing fighting, the Ethiopian government has been blaming the TPLF, which was one of the four coalition fronts of Ethiopia’s former ruling party the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), for masterminding various treasonous acts across different parts of the country with an overarching goal of destabilizing the country.
