KAMPALA, Ugandan: October 30 (EI) — The African Court of Human and Peoples Rights (ACHPR) on Wednesday stressed its commitment to promote judicial education in a bid to establish a model African Justice Network.
Sylvian Ore, ACHPR President, made the remarks during the start of the Fourth African Judicial Dialogue forum in Ugandan capital, Kampala.
The fourth African Judicial Dialogue is organized by the ACHPR under the auspices of the AU. The fourth African Judicial Dialogue is being held under the theme: “Tackling Contemporary Human Rights Issues in Africa.
“In order to have a better justice we’ve emphasized judicial education in Africa, ways and means of establishing a model African justice network, the use of information technology in the judicial system and the use of regional court decisions by national courts in Africa,” said Ore.
“These are all aimed at protecting the rights of citizens in a harmonized way” Ore said, adding “Though Justice is timeless, the manner in which its rendered is often shaped by current events” further said Ore.
Ore also said modern challenges facing African countries make it imperative for there to be humane judicial solidarity.
The Fourth Judicial Dialogue which started on Wednesday and will continue until Friday is being held with the main objective of identifying major current human rights issues facing Africa and what role the Judiciary could play to deal with such issues.
In the three days of session, the Fourth Judicial Dialogue is expected to discuss the issue of the problem of migration, Internally Displaced People (IDPs), refugees, the right to nationality in Africa and election petitions and human rights, and the role of the judiciary,
The Fourth Judicial Dialogue is also expected discuss the role of judiciary in tackling terrorism and the protection of human rights as well as the role of the judiciary in the development and rights of indigenous peoples.
The dialogue is also expected to assess the progress made in the implementation of the recommendations of the Third Judicial Dialogue held in November 2017 in Arusha Tanzania.
The ACHPR is a continental court established by AU member states, to ensure the protection of peoples and human rights in the continent.
The court, which commenced its operations in November 2006, has a permanent seat in Arusha, Tanzania.
