ADDIS ABABA: September 19 (EI) – Ethiopia’s Bahir Dar Industrial Park, which was built at a cost of 60 million U.S. dollars, is set to be commissioned next month, the Ethiopia Industry Park Development Corporation (IPDC) revealed on Thursday.
Amare Asgedom, Deputy CEO of IPDC, told reporters on Thursday that the Bahir Dar industrial park, located in the Amhara regional state’s capital some 560-kms north of Addis Ababa, is expected to be commissioned in October 2019.
The industrial park is under construction by the Chinese contraction company – China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
According to Asgedom, the first phase of the Bahir Dar Industrial Park project, which lies on 75 hectares of land is almost complete, with remaining electricity supply installation works being finalized.
The Deputy CEO further noted that the industrial park, once commissioned, is expected to provide job opportunities for up to 12,000 Ethiopians, many of whom are expected to be the local youth.
Bahir Dar Industrial Park is one of about a dozen textile and garment sector dedicated industrial parks that the Ethiopian government is constructing to meet its manufacturing ambitions.
Ethiopia plans to have 30 industrial parks by 2025, as part of its efforts to make the country a light manufacturing hub and lower-middle-income economy in the same period.
