Ethiopia, Pakistan agree to deepen trade, investment ties

ADDIS ABABA: September 14 (EI) — The governments of Ethiopia and Pakistan have agreed to leverage bilateral cooperation towards strengthening trade and investment ties among the two countries, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has revealed.

The two countries reached an agreed to strengthen bilateral trade and investment cooperation during the recent high-level visit by an Ethiopian delegation to Pakistan, comprised of senior Ethiopian government officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Agriculture as well as representatives from Ethiopia’s chamber of commerce and sectoral association, MoFA revealed in a statement issued on late Friday.

According to MoFA, the East African country’s delegation to Pakistan, led by Ethiopia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Tekle, discussed with the Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood as well as other senior Pakistani government officials on ways of augmenting the Ethiopia-Pakistan ties both on bilateral and multilateral spheres.

The two countries’ officials during the discussions mainly agreed to exert concerted efforts on further deepening trade and investment relations among the two countries, the statement from MoFA read.

The Ethiopia-Pakistan diplomatic relations dated back in the 1950s, which marks the establishment of diplomatic ties among the two countries.

According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the East African country, which has no embassy in Pakistan, has designated its Embassy in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, as part of the Ethiopian government’s aspirations to further elevate its bilateral relations with Pakistan.

The Asian country had also recently opened its embassy in the Ethiopian capital in its ambition to deepen its ties with Africa’s second populous nation.
