ADDIS ABABA: July 31 (EI) — Security forces in Ethiopia’s Amhara regional state have seized more than 3,0000 illicit heavy gun bullets in a sting operation, an Ethiopian official said on Wednesday.
Marelijn Wondim, Gonder City Administration Public Relations Officer in Amhara regional state, said the reported in excess of 3,000 heavy gun bullets were seized on Tuesday evening as they were being smuggled inside an auto rickshaw, state-run Ethiopia News Agency (ENA) reported on Wednesday.
The official also said confirmed that the driver of the auto rickshaw has been arrested with police currently undertaking an investigation on further potential coconspirators in the failed attempt to illegally smuggle the heavy gun bullets.
Marelijn further called on the public to be on guard against destructive forces engaged in illicit weapons trade and generally working to destroy the country’s stability.
Ethiopia has strict firearms ownership laws, with firearms ownership among the civilian population relatively rare.
However, in recent years there has been an increasing black-market economy for firearms in Ethiopia particularly in restive central, northern and eastern parts of the country.
