Federal go’t condemnes attempted coup d’etat against Amhara regional state admin

ADDIS ABABA: June 22 (Ethiopian Informer) — The Ethiopian government on Saturday condemned the attempted coup d’etat against the Ahmara regional state administration.

“The federal security apparatus has been tasked to fully contend the attempted coup d’etat, and to take appropriate measures against the perpetrators,” a statement from the Ethiopian Prime Minister’s Office issued late Saturday read.

The statement from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office also emphasized that the attempted coup d’etat is “illegal, against Ethiopia’s constitution, and strongly condemned by the federal government.”

The strong remarks from the PM’s office came shortly after the head of Ethiopian PM office’s press secretary, Nigusu Tilahun, disclosed the attempted coup d’etat against the regional state’s government structure.

Tilahun, speaking to state-run Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), said that the attempted “organized coup d’etat” has failed while the security situation in the regional capital Bahir Dar, some 570-km from Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, is “under control.”

However, both Tilahun and the statement from Ahmed’s office didn’t disclose the exact nature of the coup d’etat, nor individuals and groups that are behind the failed attempt.
