Ethiopian police nabs 224 in connection with recent deadly ethnic clashes

ADDIS ABABA: June 11 (Ethiopian Informer) – Authorities in Amhara regional state on Tuesday disclosed the arrest of some 224 people on suspicion of involvement in recent deadly ethnic clashes, regional state-run Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA) reported on Tuesday.

According to the report, Amhara region prosecutors are presently preparing to lay charge on the 224 individuals accused of involvement in ethnic clashes that left scores of people dead.

The 224 individuals are accused of involvement in ethnic clashes in the northern, southern and eastern parts of the region as well as ethnic clashes along border areas with neighboring regions, it was noted.

150 of the suspects are said to have direct involvement in ethnic clashes in central and west Gonder zones of the region, 50 others are accused of involvement in ethnic clashes in North Shoa zone of Amhara region, while the remaining 24 others are accused of involvement in ethnic clashes in areas bordering Amhara region with Benishangul Gumuz region, the report added.  

In recent months parts of Central and West Gonder zones have been suffering from deadly armed clashes between members of the dominant ethnic Amhara and minority ethnic Qimant communities.
